Taking Action for Happiness

This time of year is often associated with low mood and just ‘getting on with it.’ With warmer weather still a while away, evenings still long and dark and the excitement of the festive seasons a distant memory, it would seem as though we are doomed to face the next few months with a sense of foreboding. It was delightful then, to read last week about Lord Richard Layard’s new book ‘Can We be Happier?’ In it, the co-founder of the charity Action for Happiness explains how we can take active steps to promote happiness, not only for ourselves but also those around us. According to Action for Happiness about 40% of our happiness is down to our actions and relationships.

Another leader in the science of happiness, Prof. Richard Davidson, outlines 4 Pillars of a Healthy Mind in a Ted Talk he gave last November. In it he explains that distraction, loneliness, negative self-talk and lack of purpose can derail our happiness. To meet these, he suggests that people can develop the skills of awareness, connection, insight and purpose to cultivate well-being.

To help develop our well-being and take action for happiness I would like to investigate each of Prof. Davidson’s skill areas at the next four drop-ins. We will start with awareness on the 3rd February and the others in the following months. Come along, join in and be part of a growing community. For those of you unable to make Mondays, I will be exploring these themes at the All-Day Retreat on the 16th February. Hope to see you soon.

The drop-ins dates for the next few months are 3rd February, 2nd March, 2nd April and 4th May. All at 7pm in the Dorchester Yoga and Therapy Centre. Please note the April session is the first Thursday as I am away for the Monday (I’ll remind you nearer the time).

Still places on the All-Day Retreat 16th February 10.30 to 16.00. A wonderful opportunity to reaffirm your practice, take a bit of time out and eat good food! We will also be exploring the pillars of a healthy mind during this day of retreat. The cost is £35 for the day including vegetarian meal.

Drop-Ins During July I am changing the times of the drop-in from July, going back to a two-weekly pattern. We will meet on alternate Mondays starting on the 6th July.  All are welcome regardless of experience. Please click on the button below to join us.
